There’s a new face behind the chair here on the salon floor, sort of!

Holly LaRiviere has been behind the salon chairs here for a while now—two years in fact.  However, she was in that role as a Salon Assistant, watching and learning to complete her training and earn her recent promotion to Interlocks Associate Stylist. 

Although she grew up in this area, Holly completed her education at Vidal Sassoon Academy in California prior to beginning the Assistant Program here at Interlocks.  We asked her why she decided to go so far away for school.  She explained, “I figured you’ve got to do it up!  I mean, this was the school, Vidal Sassoon…it doesn’t get any more prestigious and I was serious about starting a career.”  At the time, Holly was just 17.  We think this speaks volumes about her maturity and ambition.

“Holly has such amazing drive,” says Andrea Rumph, a Master Stylist / Board Certified Master Colorist, and Interlocks’ Senior Salon Educator. As Holly’s primary teacher in the Salon, Andrea witnessed great technique. “She came to us with a really strong foundation in cutting techniques, and she picked up portions of the training faster than some others might have.  This allowed her to focus and perfect other parts of her styling regimen.”

We sat down with Holly for a conversation about her journey through our Salon Assistant program and her transition to the styling floor full time.  She also shared what most excites her as she meets new clients!

INTERLOCKS: How did you like California?  Were you tempted to stay on after you completed your Vidal Sassoon program?

HOLLY:  I had a small apartment right on Santa Monica beach, just a block from the academy. It was nice, but I’m definitely a New England girl!  I knew I was going to come back home.

INTERLOCKS:  Tell us about how you ended up at Interlocks in our Assistant program.

HOLLY:  When I first got back I moved in with my mom in Newburyport.  I landed a job working at Vidal Sassoon Salon in Boston. But after three months, I discovered I really wasn’t a “City Girl” any more than I was a “California Girl.” I knew Interlocks had a great reputation, and I figured why be stressed out about going into Boston when there was this great salon right around the corner.

INTERLOCKS:  What was your favorite part of the Interlocks training?

HOLLY:  Color has always been my favorite; that’s where I really enjoy being creative.  It was great to broaden my education and learn different techniques, through watching the Master Stylists here.  I really like that, even as just an assistant, there have been so many educational opportunities available to me.

INTERLOCKS:  Is there anything personal you would like to share with our readers?

HOLLY: I am an avid sailor, grew up going down to the Cape with my family to our summer place.  Oh, and I have a little dog Louis, who is a Pomeranian.  He’s my love!

INTERLOCKS:  In closing, what are you most excited about as you embark on establishing a client base?

HOLLY:  I really love fashion and trends, but I tend to be a little conservative.  It’s always fun to have a client who gives me the opportunity to become risqué.

We asked Andrea what assets she thought Holly brings to the salon floor.  “One of her best strengths is that she is a great listener,” says Andrea.  “I think clients will enjoy the consultation process with Holly because she will be able to seamlessly translate their wishes into a wearable style.  She also has such as great sense of fashion that allows for her to really excel at things like braids, up ‘do’s and color techniques like ombre.”

Ask just about any woman which makeup she won’t leave the house without applying, and the answer is mascara.  Some will say lipstick, and I’ll admit for me lipstick is a close second. But for most women I know, the eyes have it (pun intended)!

Lashes and dramatic eyes are all the rage this Spring, from runway to real life.  Here at the salon, we’re seeing this trend emerge as a mainstay among our clients.

Interlocks is pleased to welcome a new addition to our spa staff, Youliana Roussou.  Youliana, or “Yana” has been working as a professional esthetician for over 15 years.  While originally from Maldova, Yana has made her home on Boston’s North Shore since coming to the U.S. twenty-one years ago.  She says she loves Boston and could not imagine living anywhere else.

Yana specializes in facials as well as waxing.  A Best of Boston Winner, Boston Magazine published, “These are the qualities we look for in waxing: speed, and a thoroughness that lets us put off the next one for as long as possible. After 15 years on the strip (so to speak), Roussou has the process down pat. She’s versed in the fine art of distraction—as she chatters on about shopping or the local dating scene you scarcely notice the hot wax near your nether regions. Plus, post-treatment includes a gentle rubdown with calming oils.“  We are thrilled to be adding Yana’s expertise to our talented spa team.

We sat down with Yana to ask what she likes best about being an esthetician and what she is excited to share with clients at Interlocks:

INTERLOCKS: What is the one thing that you would most recommend for women who are looking to revitalize their skin?

YANA: Exfoliation is the most important. If you don’t have time to do anything else, don’t skip this!  It’s the most successful way to fight dullness and dryness. When you use a moisturizer, but do not exfoliate, there is not as much benefit as the product is not able to fully penetrate the skin. I like PCA Skin, Gentle Exfoliant; it’s very gentle and has a nice creamy texture because the scrub contains smooth beads, which cleanse and gently sluffs away dead skin.

INTERLOCKS: Which facial are you most likely to recommend for someone who wants to nourish their skin with a gentle approach?

YANA: Oh, absolutely The Decleõr Excellence Facial! The Decleõr products are so luxurious and extremely nourishing. INTERLOCKS: What would you advise for clients to do at home to maintain their skin?

YANA: Well, moisturizing is also key to having a healthy complexion.  It’s impossible to make a generalization about what type, and how often, as it’s truly individual.  I make recommendations based on my clients’ needs and I also consider the season, and their daily regimen.  We tend to think of moisturizing as just applying lotion, but it really should be prescribed by a professional esthetician.  It should be absolutely perfect for your skin’s needs, not borrowed from someone else or picked up at random. 

INTERLOCKS: Is there anything personal you would like to share with our readers?

YANA: My son will soon be a freshman in college.  It’s so fantastic and I’m thrilled for him! He chose a college in Massachusetts, so he won’t be too far away which is good for me as I will miss him.  I plan to keep busy by focusing on my career and I am very happy to now be a part of the Interlocks – the salon and spa have a superior reputation in the Boston area, and the staff are truly a wonderful group of people.
